Résumé

Background. The link between social deprivation and health is well-established by epidemiological studies. Patients in precarious situations are at risk for morbidity and mortality. Primary health care professionals are in a strategic position to strengthen prevention efforts in these populations. However, few studies have assessed socially deprived patients' expectations toward health care professionals. Aim. To explore the expectations of socially deprived patients towards health care professionals. Method. Qualitative study by semi-directed interviews with precarious patients (with an EPICES > 30). The sampling followed the principle of maximum variation. The interview guide made it possible to address the patient's life history, the link between their social situation and health and their expectations towards health professionals. The analysis based on grounded theory was comprehensive. Results. Fourteen interviews were conducted. Patients interviewed were expecting bio-medical and interpersonal skills from health professionals, taking into account the material, economic and accessibility aspects of care. The focus was on listening and the time devoted to them. Some mentioned a sense of stigma related to their social condition. Conclusion. Precarious patients were expecting biomedical and relational skills from healthcare professionals. In practice, it is necessary to initiate and maintain a good relationship between patient and caregiver and to accord sufficient time to patients.
